It’s that time again–the annual pilgrimage to the worldwide mystery convention known as Bouchercon. The moveable Mecca of the mystery writing scene sets up its tents in St. Petersburg, Florida this year and it’s always a big draw bringing writers and avid readers together.
Last year’s convention in Toronto drew over 1,400 participants to the four day celebration of all things mystery and suspense. You’ll find the likes of Lee Child (truly one of the nicest guys in the business), Michael Connelly, Karin Slaughter, and Louise Penny in the hallways. You can check out a panel on any subject or mystery genre under the sun, or just find a group of authors talking about the in’s and out’s of publishing.
The hotel bar is usually one of the most well used venues at Bouchercon. These conventions are often the only time we get to see one another and catch up. The bar serves as that meet up point–like when your mom left you at the amusement park and said if you get lost go to a certain spot–only this spot is way more fun. Don’t feel that you need to drink to join in. A good number of the folks you find there are not drinking–just talking.
This year, there’s grassroots effort to make sure everyone feels safe from harassment, or bad behavior. Look for a silver star on the name tags and that person will help you out, or walk you to your room, if needed.
